I don't know anyone who likes to move. Why would you? First, you have to decide what to keep and what to get rid of. Then, having made this decision, you have to figure what to do with the stuff you are going to get rid of: Should you try to sell it by way of a yard sale or Craigs List? Or should you just give it away? Failing that, do you get a dumping permit for the landfill, because you just know the local charity or thrift shop isn't going to want one more singing fish or burping bear clock or cookie jar that unleashes a torrent of profanity when you take the lid off? And once all that is done, then comes the task of packing what is going to the new place. Which never works, because you always end up with a pile of stuff in the middle of the living room that you should throw out, but you can't bring yourself to toss because you know if you do you'll go looking for it, and won't be able to find it because you remember you threw it out. You know the stuff I'm referring to: The velvet Elvis or the moon-faced dogs playing poker or the black light Jesus that The Antique Roadshow informs is worth way more than what you paid for it in Mexico on that spur-of-the-moment trip in college when you should have been studying or working or being more responsible than you were. Then - oh, give me strength - then comes the task, the burden, the almost-impossible pursuit of getting the entire materialistic aspect of your existence from Point A to Point B, without losing important parts of it, only to discover it doesn't fit: The couch is too long for the living room, the bed is too big for the bedroom - even though you measured everything at least a dozen times. And if it does fit it doesn't. . . fit. The wallpaper or the paint job or the lighting clashes with the furnishings to the point it is painful to even gaze upon anything. And if that isn't enough then you physically harm yourself when you bark your shins against the coffee table or fall over the chair in the dark because it isn't where it used to be. It's where it is now, and that, well, that isn't right. But what's a person to do? You wanted to move. You agreed to move, and here you, with boxes and boxes of stuff that has to be unboxed and stored and kept and managed. Until the next move. When word came this blog was moving I sighed in response, and asked what that meant. For now, all you have to do, I was told, is make note of the move, and make nice, be nice, and introduce yourself, because the new place isn't the old place, and the folks at the new place don't know you. So, here I am. I'm "Travis". I'm a guest blogger. One of two, presently. I was the first guest blogger for this blog, which is something of a distinction, I suppose, considering. As guest blogger I'm responsible for a territory of sorts. A place known as 'northern Colorado'. 'NoCo', according to some who prefer such shorthand. As guest blogger it is my responsibility to write about happenings of a political nature in these quarters - from a Conservative perspective. Which brings me to an important point: I consider myself a Conservative only because I can't find a more appropriate term to describe myself. When I do - you'll be among the first to know. Otherwise, I don't march to the beat of the Conservative drum, so don't come down on me if I deviate from the Conservative playbook. So. There it is. Nice to meet you.
